Safe Shelter Needs You

Shoalhaven Mayor is urgently calling for volunteers to spend time a Nowra’s Safe Shelter this summer season.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said the Safe Shelter provides safe emergency overnight housing for those that experience homelessness in the region.

“This Christmas give the gift of giving by spending some time at the Shelter and experience first-hand the rewarding and important work this organisation is doing to help support the community’s most vulnerable members,” Mayor Findley said.

Made up of local community members and church groups who offer their time to operate this vital operation, the service also supplies essentials including meals, toiletries, bedding and clothing as well as referrals to support services and encouraging attendance at medical and therapeutic appointments.

“People think that safe shelter is only needed in winter, however, it is needed all year long and now leading up to summer it is currently at capacity. We need your help to give our current volunteers a break to rest and recover to continue their valuable contributions to the community.

“I volunteer once a month at the shelter and feel blessed to be able to contribute to this project in this way. Your gift of time to help at this residence is a massive contribution and I appeal to you, as a community who wanted this project to happen, to get on board to help keep this project running.

“Over Christmas, resources become further stretched and they desperately need more volunteers in order to help continue the great work they do in our community. You can help support the Shelter by arranging to become a volunteer or donate to this worthy service.” Clr Findley said.
