Saying Thank You this ANZAC Day

Guy Barnett,Minister for Veterans’ Affairs

ANZAC Day provides an opportunity for Tasmanians to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women and recognise the families and organisations who support them.

I encourage Tasmanians to take the opportunity to contact someone they know who is a veteran, currently serving in the armed forces or the family member of veteran or service member, and say thank you.

Their service and sacrifice has helped make this nation what it is today and is deserving of our gratitude.

For many veterans and their families, ANZAC Day is the primary time each year that they catch up with friends and relatives in a mutual appreciation of their experiences and mateship.

Due to the coronavirus situation, ANZAC Day 2020 will be like no other, with marches and reunions cancelled across the nation.

This year, Anzac Day is a real chance for Tasmanians to reach out and connect with the individuals, families and organisations who have defended and supported this country.

Please also take the opportunity to stand at the end of your driveway or on a balcony or porch at dawn tomorrow, or during the day, and take a minute’s silence in honour of those who have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice, and say thank you.

ANZAC Day 2020 will be different from anything we have known in the past – but we can still make it special and memorable for the people who count, by saying thank you.
