School blitz catches drug drivers, South Australia

A police operation around school zones and targeting drivers who have consumed alcohol or illicit drugs was conducted state-wide yesterday (3 April).

Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive Schools took place in the vicinity of school drop off and pick up areas in both the morning and afternoon peak times.

Eight drivers, none of whom had children in the car or were dropping off/picking up children, tested positive for illicit drugs.

They were:

* A 32-year-old man stopped in Adelaide’s south in the morning.

* A girl aged 17 who was stopped in Whyalla in the morning.

* Five men – two aged 27, two aged 37 and one aged 28 – each stopped separately in the Murray Mallee region in the afternoon.

* A 58-year-old man stopped in the west of the state in the afternoon.

Each will face further legal consequences following the completion of forensic testing.

One driver – a 38-year-old man – also returned a positive breath test for alcohol (0.051) in the Yorke Mid North region, with two children in the car. The Department of Child Protection have been notified.

In addition, police reported one driver and issued 53 expiation notices for a range of other traffic offences including speeding, inappropriate parking and failing to wear a seatbelt, as well as issuing 11 defect notices.
