Holiday-Makers Urged to Plan Around Forecast Heavy Falls
With heavy rain forecast over the next few days and school holidays now underway, NSW SES is urging holidaymakers to plan trips carefully and avoid unnecessary travel.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast significant rain between Port Stephens and Batemans Bay this weekend, 2-3 July, with particularly heavy totals in the Illawarra likely leading to flash flooding.
NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey urged people to avoid travelling where possible or drive to conditions.
“With more people on the roads and visiting caravan and camping sites across the state, it is important to be aware of your risk and monitor conditions,” Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey said.
“With this significant weather system, there is potential for evacuations depending on the amount of rain that falls, so we need communities to prepare now.”
With heavy rain forecast over the Greater Sydney area, the Bureau has also forecast minor to major riverine flooding in the Hawkesbury-Nepean catchment this weekend and into the start of next week.
“While some communities in these catchments may have avoided flooding before, don’t assume it won’t affect you this time,” he said.
“Review your emergency plans, and if you are likely to be isolated, restock your emergency kit and supplies now. Check on your neighbours, and prepare your livestock.
“Always follow the advice of emergency services. If you are asked to leave, please be ready to respond quickly.”
