Science & Technology Australia extends congratulations to Tanya Ha, the co-chair of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Sub-committee, on her election to the Board of the Diversity Council of Australia.
The sole member of the Board with a science background, STA was proud to support Tanya’s nomination.
Tanya Ha is one of two directors elected, alongside Abbie Wright, Inclusion & Diversity Leader at Arup, who has been re-elected to the board.
“The idea that diversity is healthy makes complete sense for anyone with an environmental background,” said Ms Ha.
“The work of the Diversity Council Australia is showing that promoting diversity and inclusion makes good economic sense, too. Importantly, they’re providing practical resources and tools to help their members address equity issues.”
“We know there’s a gender pay gap in science and technology. We know that, for the biological sciences, the challenge isn’t attracting female students; it’s keeping them in academia later in their careers. We know that panel events, prizes and media stories on science often don’t reflect our multicultural diversity. There’s work to be done, and we want to help.”
CEO of Science & Technology Australia, Ms Kylie Walker, said Tanya would be an effective and passionate representative for the tens of thousands of Australian scientists and technologists.
“Our sector, like many others, faces barriers to equity, diversity and inclusion,” Ms Walker said.
“Tanya has demonstrated that she is a strong advocate for eliminating them, and STA will support her work in any way we can.”
