Premier Mark McGowan has toured Harvey Primary School today, one of the State’s oldest schools, to meet with students and staff and view the school’s innovative science programs and new facilities.
Harvey Primary School was successful in the McGowan Government’s Primary Science Program enabling staff to expand their specialist science classes for students from Year 1 to Year 6.
The school received more than $27,000 through the program which allowed a total revamp of the existing science classroom including new flooring, electrical work, storeroom modifications and new classroom furniture.
Funding was also allocated to the school as part of the State Government’s school maintenance blitz to refresh and modernise facilities.
More than $129,000 was spent on refurbishments to toilet blocks and $62,400 was used to recarpet and paint the school’s administration foyer and reception, giving the entrance a welcoming new look.
The McGowan Government’s maintenance blitz represents one of the biggest investments in Western Australian schools and builds on the Government’s $453 million investment in 2019-20 alone, to improve infrastructure in public schools and create jobs.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“It’s so important to encourage children’s interest in science at a young age, to prepare them for future learning and potentially spark an interest in science-related career paths.
“Harvey Primary School already had an innovative science program for students from Years 1 to 6 with a specialist science teacher.
“My Government’s Primary Science Program enabled the school to upgrade their science classroom, and purchase additional resources which has significantly enhanced students’ skills and understanding.”
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“Harvey Primary School was founded in 1899, making it one of the State’s oldest schools.
“These upgrades will ensure that despite being a historic school, the classrooms are well equipped for science to be taught, helping to prepare students for jobs of the future.
“I’m delighted to see this important election commitment taking shape.”
