- $4.9 million second stage construction works for Spalding renewal project now complete
- Works included new road extensions, upgrades to AMC Park and improvements to the Mitchell Street Community Centre building
- 26 social homes have been refurbished as part of the project
- Part of the Cook Labor Government’s $9.3 million investment to revitalise Spalding
Premier Roger Cook and Housing Minister John Carey joined Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton and representatives from the City of Greater Geraldton today to officially mark the completion of the $4.9 million second stage of the Spalding Urban Renewal Project.
The second stage of works includes new road extensions and footpaths, refurbishments to social housing and upgrades to AMC Park to make Spalding a more vibrant place.
The $9.3 million urban renewal project is being carried out in three stages to improve the amenity of the area, which has seen 12 derelict, ageing and no longer fit-for-purpose social housing properties demolished to make way for a new road connection and improve accessibility and connectivity in the suburb.
Out of 48 social homes, 26 have undergone major refurbishments to extend their useful life, with works underway on a further 14 units, including three that are nearing practical completion.
The second stage of works also included upgrades to the Mitchell Street Community Centre building and improved public open spaces.
The upgrades to AMC Park include a new waterplay feature, flying fox, a multi-use court, bush tucker garden, yarning circle, barbeques, covered picnic tables and public toilets.
The Spalding project is part of a $20 million State Government regional renewal package to support social housing revitalisation in Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany.
The third and final stage of the Spalding project will see refurbishment works completed to 22 social homes.

“It’s fantastic to be in Geraldton to officially mark the completion of the second stage of construction works, which will make Spalding a more vibrant and connected place.
“The revitalisation project has seen the removal of social housing that is no longer fit-for-purpose to make way for new connected roads to improve accessibility and community connectivity, as well as refurbishments of a number of other social homes.”
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
“Our Government is undertaking a number of major urban renewal projects across Western Australia through the Cook Government’s $20 million regional renewal program and we’re now seeing the final stages of completion here at Spalding in Geraldton.
“As part of the Cook Government’s $20 million regional renewal program, we’re investing $9 million into the Spalding Renewal Project to transform the precinct into a thriving community.
“It is great to mark the completion of the second stage construction works that included improved road and pedestrian connections which will result in increased accessibility around Spalding.
“The Cook Government is investing a record $2.6 billion in housing and homelessness measures, including the delivery of around 4,000 social homes.”

“As the local member for Geraldton I have been advocating strongly for my community and I am thrilled to see the completion of the second stage of works here at Spalding.
“These completed works will contribute to the long-term aim to revitalise the suburb and meet the community’s vision for Spalding to be a welcoming and vibrant place to live and visit.”
