Sections of Moreton Island reopens to campers

The Department of Environment and Science (DES) has today confirmed the reopening of some sections of Moreton Island to visitors and campers following the recent wildfire event.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) officers had closed all camping areas on Moreton Island and QPWS managed roads north of Middle Road while emergency services attended to fires affecting significant areas across the island.

Following assessment today by QPWS officers, campgrounds which have been reopened include:

  • Ben Ewa camping area
  • The Wrecks camping area
  • South-east camping zone
  • South-west camping zone

All other camping areas remain closed.

Following assessment today by QPWS officers, roads which have been reopened include:

  • Middle Road
  • Tangalooma Bypass
  • Cowan Bypass
  • Harper track to Cape Moreton
  • Desert track

Visitors are reminded to observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and in particular to comply with prohibited entry signage.
