Service changes during COVID-19 conditions

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters continues to respond to State and Federal Government directives and take proactive measures to ensure the safety of our community during COVID-19 (Coronavirus) conditions by limiting, postponing or suspending services and events.

Following the Federal Government announcement of Stage 2 social distancing restrictions, the Council has closed the Norwood Swimming Centre effective from 8.00am, Wednesday 25 March.

“We made the decision to close the Norwood Swimming Centre as of 8.00am this morning, in an effort to minimise the spread of COVID-19,” says Mayor Robert Bria.

Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre closed on Sunday 22 March—the scheduled season closing date.

In addition to the closure of Norwood Swimming Centre, the Council’s three libraries, community centre and other facilities for hire will also be temporarily closed from 12 noon today.

“We understand that the Council’s libraries are much-loved and well-utilised by our community, and even though the libraries will remain closed for the interim, library card holders can still access plenty of books and online learning opportunities from any mobile device through the Libraries SA app.”

The Libraries SA online catalogue, available on the app, offers a huge range of books, digital magazines and newspapers, and online learning opportunities. The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

While many Council facilities will be closed and with programs and services suspended, essential services will continue to be offered.

“Waste collection, street sweeping and field services will continue as normal and the Norwood Town Hall offices will remain open at this stage, subject to any further lockdown measures.”

The new raft of changes follow the Council’s proactive decisions to limit gatherings of people in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and the associated risk to our community, employees and Volunteers

  • all Council events, exhibitions and library and cultural heritage programs have been suspended with the intent of rescheduling some of these in the future however this will be reviewed at a later date
  • Council’s three Libraries will close to the public today from 12.00 noon on Wednesday 25 March until further notice
  • non-essential community and Volunteer services have ceased, however the following essential services which assist the vulnerable, elderly and less mobile members of our community will continue:

– Home Support Shopping Program

– Justices of the Peace (reduced times, please check the Council’s website)

– Friends of the Billabong

  • Council facilities for hire including Norwood Concert Hall, Don Pyatt Hall, St Peters Youth Centre, St Peters Town Hall Complex and Payneham Community Centre are closed in accordance with Government guidelines regarding indoor public gatherings
  • Council and essential committee meetings will continue as normal at this stage
  • The next scheduled Citizenship Ceremonies will continue in accordance with Federal Department of Home Affairs protocols at this stage.

As this situation continues to evolve over the coming weeks and possibly months, the Council will continue to regularly monitor updates regarding COVID-19 and will act on all Federal and State Government advice accordingly and provide regular updates to our community.

“This is not an ordinary time. The Council has made some tough decisions and continues to act on all advice and recommendations of Federal and State Governments.

“On behalf of the Council, I assure our citizens that all decisions have been made with the health and well-being of our community, staff and Volunteers as the utmost priority.”

Mayor Bria also acknowledges the financial impact that COVID-19 may have on members of our community and says these matters will also be reviewed over the coming weeks.

“The Council’s responsible management of the City’s finances means it is in good financial position to absorb some sudden shocks such as the impacts of COVID-19.”

“Where possible I encourage you to continue to support our local businesses by shopping local, while exercising care and caution in relation to hygiene and personal contact, and following all Federal and State Government lockdown measures.”

“We all need to play our part in managing this crisis by acting on all directions issued by Federal and State Governments and health officials.

“I cannot urge you more to comply with social distancing—maintain physical distances but please phone, text or email loved ones to make sure they are okay.

“Now more than ever, we need to care for and support one another, particularly our elderly residents, vulnerable neighbours and those living alone.”

“Our community is strong and resilient and we will get through the COVID-19 conditions together.”
