The Territory Labor Government has launched public consultation on the future plans of the Shiers Street public housing complex in the Narrows.
As an election commitment the Territory Government has been holding public meetings with local residents regarding the public housing complex.
The Territory Labor Government is leading and reforming the current outdated public housing system. We are investing in more community housing and partnering with Community Housing Providers. We recently announced an extra $21 million for more social and affordable housing to improve liveability, boost our economy and drive investment across the Northern Territory.
We are exploring the option of delivering the Shiers Street redevelopment in partnership with a community housing provider. The community housing sector has a strong track record of delivering high quality urban renewal projects throughout Australia and this project provides an opportunity to improve the overall neighbourhood amenity.
The Territory Government is working on ensuring there is no loss of social housing stock in the Territory by working with agencies and the sector to identify sites for future redevelopment to deliver replacement and additional social housing.
This approach includes facilitating private sector investment and growth of the community housing sector as a key deliverer of social housing and also in line with the recommendations in the TERC report.

Quotes from Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing, Kate Worden:
“It is important as a Government we always revaluate our public housing assets and see how sites can be redeveloped.
“We are not leaving any of our residents homeless, they will be placed in alternate public housing dwellings in accordance with public housing policy, and this process is already underway.
“In consultation with the local community we will investigate potential redevelopment opportunities for longer term use of the site.”
Quotes from Member for Fong Lim, Mark Monaghan:
“As local member this is exciting to see. I am determined as Labor MLA that we provide dignified housing options for people that allow them to flourish not place them into environments that are nothing more than bastions of poverty.
“Community input is open now until 19 December and we look forward to receiving feedback.”
