With construction of the new Aquatic Centre in Rosebud well underway, Mornington Peninsula Shire is inviting the community to be involved in an exciting part of the milestone project – naming the facility!

The name will seek to create a connection with the Peninsula community through place, environment and feel approachable, welcoming and positive.

The local community is encouraged to add its voice to a facility that will make a splash in Rosebud and across the Peninsula!

Suggestions will be considered by a naming panel and a shortlist will be presented to Council for a final decision. The naming panel will assess the suggestions against a set of criteria to develop the shortlist. The naming panel will include representatives from the community, Shire and the creative agency developing the brand for the new aquatic centre.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said that the name will aim to create a strong connection between the community and a facility which will offer much more than just a swimming pool.

“Our new Aquatic Centre will be a hub for the entire community, and its name will serve an important role in creating a strong identity for the facility,” he said.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Antonella Celi said “Council is focused on the social, health and well-being benefits the Aquatic Centre will bring to our community therefore the name plays an important role in making it a place that all will feel welcome to visit”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Frank Martin said “with benefits of the Aquatic Centre including employment opportunities during the construction and once the centre opens, the name is an important part of how the community will connect and relate to the centre.”

Seawinds Ward Councillor Simon Brooks said “as construction continues to progress quickly the Aquatic Centre is becoming a reality for the community and deciding on the right name is another step on this journey.”

Naming suggestions are welcome until Monday 2 March and can be submitted online or by completing a hard copy form at Mornington Peninsula Shire Customer Service Centres.

The names suggested that will be considered must comply with Geographic Names Victoria name rules which include:

  • Linking name to place – names should be relevant to the local area.
  • Names cannot be duplicated within a 15km radius – this includes similar spelling or pronunciation.
  • Commemorative names – the person must have been held in high regard by the community and names of people who are alive must be avoided.
  • Commercial and business names must not be used.
  • Directional names must be avoided (north, south etc.)

The new Aquatic Centre construction is scheduled for completion late 2020. Key highlights of the construction will include environmental design features to improve efficiency throughout the building.
