Mornington Peninsula Shire is calling all residents to get their hands dirty, minds creative and bring colour to local streets with the Shire’s ‘bin art’ project.
For many Peninsula residents, getting creative has been a survival tool to get them get through COVID-19 and lockdown.
With state restrictions urging us to stay at home, Mornington Peninsula Shire is encouraging residents to paint your Council wheelie bins in any style you choose, drawing inspiration from your local area and community.
Victorian Australian of the Year finalist and Mornington Peninsula Australia Day Citizen of the Year 2019 Josie Jones brought the idea to Council after sharing her own bin creation on Facebook.
Josie’s idea for the project is that it will be a great way for residents to think about community connection and taking care of our environment.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said, “in unpredictable times, this community led initiative is a family-fun project that everyone can get involved in”.
“One of the best things to come out of COVID for the Shire has been to see the way the community have come together to stay connected and support each other,” concluded Cr Hearn.
To get involved, all participants will need to upload a photo of their painted bins to their own Instagram account tagging the Shire’s Arts and Culture Instagram page (@mornpenartsandculture). Uploaded photos will need to include the hashtag #MPBINspiration.
Photos will then be shared on the Arts and Culture Instagram page and the community can vote through ‘liking’ their favourite bin design.
The bin with the most ‘likes’ on the Arts and Culture Instagram page will win a Zero Waste Living Pack valued up to $150 that includes a Keep Cup, reusable kitchen and shopping products and your choice out of a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi bin.
Zero Waste Living Packs support Council’s Beyond Zero Waste Strategy encouraging residents to reduce their household waste sent to landfill and cut back on single-use plastics.
Bin art entries are welcome until Monday 17 August 2020.
Guidelines for entry:
- Water-based exterior paint to be used (please note Shire will not be providing supplies)
- Do not paint over bin numbers including house number and bin serial number
- Do not paint over bin lids
- Keep designs aligned with Shire values of Integrity, Courage, Openness, Respect and Excellence
- Upload photo of painted bin to your Instagram account tagging @mornpenartsandculture with the hashtag #MPBINspiration and Mornington Peninsula Shire will reshare on the Arts and Culture Instagram page
- If you do not have Instagram, message a photo of you bin design to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Arts and Culture Facebook account.
