Significant step forward for creation of Marmion Marine Park

  • 12 members to the Community Reference Committee appointed
  • Proposal will more than triple the size of Marmion Marine Park
  • State Government has created nine new national parks since 2017
  • The McGowan Government has appointed 12 members to the Community Reference Committee (CRC) for the review and proposed expansion of the Marmion Marine Park.

The CRC will be chaired by Whadjuk Noongar Traditional Owner Noel Morich, who also currently serves as a Director on the board for the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council.

The Marmion Marine Park review and proposed expansion was announced earlier this year as part of the McGowan Government’s Plan for Our Parks initiative, and is being jointly managed with Traditional Owners who will be closely involved in the planning process.

The proposed expansion seeks to more than triple the size of the marine park, extending the boundary north to Two Rocks and west to the limit of State waters.

The proposal includes a review of all management arrangements, including the marine park zoning scheme.

The proposed changes to the marine park, located along the Perth metropolitan area’s northern coastline, reflect the increasing popularity of the area, will recognise the cultural values of the Whadjuk Noongar people and will allow for continued sustainable commercial and recreational activities such as fishing, tourism, diving and boating.

    The committee members are:

    • Cale Alexander
    • Katrina Bornt
    • Amanda Broome
    • Glen Cowans
    • Zara Edmond
    • Peter Gardner
    • Lee Johnson
    • Basil Lenzo
    • Steven Marns
    • David Sutcliffe
    • Prue Vaughan
    • Renata Zelinova

The first CRC meeting will take place during the first week of May. More information on the review and proposed expansion of the Marmion Marine Park can be found here.

As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:

“Enhancing the protection of our environment is a high priority for this Government.

“Thank you to all who applied to be part of the Community Reference Committee. The applications were of excellent quality with a vast range of knowledge represented.

“I look forward to the recommendations that will be made by the CRC and encourage the community to take part in ongoing consultations.”

As stated by Fisheries Minister Don Punch:

“With an average 1.7 million visits per year, Marmion Marine Park is a popular spot located right on Perth’s doorstep and is much loved by the community.

“We are committed to genuine engagement with our commercial, recreational and charter fishing sectors and I am confident this will occur with the high calibre of the members appointed to the Community Reference Committee.”
