Significant upgrades begin at Lightwood Park

Jane Howlett,Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to giving our State the best chance possible at hosting team base camps for the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Today I was pleased to visit Lightwood Park in Kingston and see that upgrades have begun at the facility.

The project will see the construction of eight new change rooms and the installation of new lighting.

During the 2021 State Election campaign, our Government committed $10 million towards soccer facility upgrades at Devonport (Valley Road), Launceston (Birch Avenue and Churchill Park) and Kingborough (Lightwood Park).

This will not only create opportunities for local talent, but also help Tasmania’s push to host base camps for international sides during the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Three million dollars has been committed to upgrading Lightwood Park, with this stage of the project expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The remaining funds for the $3.4 million project are being provided through a Tasmanian Government Levelling the Playing Field Grant and by the Kingborough Council.

This investment complements the $300,000 over two years committed to Football Tasmania to increase the growth and boost the profile of women and girls participating in football in Tasmania.

The improved facilities at Lightwood Park will be utilised by all levels of players, from grassroots to the elite level, and hopefully help to boost participation in the sport.

We will announce progress on upgrades at Valley Road, Churchill Park and Birch Avenue in the coming months.
