The City of Swan is proud to recognise and celebrate National Sikh Day on Friday, April 14, which marks the 324th birth anniversary of the Khalsa, a fellowship of devout Sikhs.
The Sikh community will host a celebration for the first time in the City of Swan at the Midland Town Hall on Friday, April 14 from 4-6pm.
The event is open to all and will include traditional celebrations and food.
Mel Congerton, City of Swan Deputy Mayor, said the City of Swan is proud to recognise and celebrate National Sikh Day.
“The Sikh community is one of our biggest religious communities here in the City of Swan and this is reflective of our rich cultural diversity, with more than a third of our residents born overseas,” he said.
“We are very proud to recognise these celebrations, celebrate our diversity, and encourage our community to take this opportunity to learn more about the wonderful values of equality and nobility at the heart of the Sikh community.”
Jagdip Singh, Altone Ward Councillor, said it meant a lot to share these celebrations with the broader community.
“This is one of the most religiously significant days in the Sikh calendar, and it marks the 324th birth anniversary of the Khalsa, a fellowship of devout Sikhs,” he said.
“The month of April is also Sikh Heritage Month, as most important days are commemorated in the month of April.
“As a Councillor, it is very important to me to try and bring communities together, so we can be more accepting of one another.
“I welcome everyone to come along and attend our celebrations at the Midland Town Hall and learn something new about the Sikh community.”
