The Australian Government is expanding the Cheaper Home Batteries Program from original estimates of $2.3 billion to an estimated $7.2 billion over the next 4 years.
This is expected to:
- help over 2 million Australians install a battery by 2030
- deliver around 40 GWh of additional storage capacity.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has been an unprecedented success. The program has brought down the cost of installing a solar connected battery. This has made it possible for more Australians to maximise cheap and clean solar energy, and participate in the energy transition.
Since launch, the program has:
- supported delivery over 160,000 battery installations across Australia
- added over 3.6 GWh of capacity to the energy grid
- purchased over 21,000,000 small-scale technology certificates.
Alongside the increased funding estimates, from 1 May 2026, we will make adjustments to ensure:
- the discount is encouraging households to get the right-sized battery for their needs
- the program remains sustainable.
Small-scale batteries mark the next evolution in Australia’s renewable energy journey.
