Skull handed in to police

A man has handed in a human skull to police that had been in his family’s possession for decades.

The remains were apparently found during the West Lakes development in the 1970s and some workers took them as souvenirs.

The man recently ‘inherited’ the skull from his father and was unsure and uneasy about what to do with it so he contacted police.

A forensic scientist confirmed the skull was a pre-European (ancient Aboriginal remains) adult female.

SAPOL and our Community Constables are working with Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Department of the Premier and Cabinet to ensure the repatriation of the remains to Country.

All ancestral remains including ancient artefacts should be treated with respect. If you uncover skeletal remains, do not disturb them, and call 131 444.

Anyone who has similar remains in their possession or any information about other remains is encouraged to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
