The Cardinia Road Level Crossing Removal Project team have installed an innovative smart lighting system as part of the new open space beneath Cardinia Road bridge.
The system uses LED solar and grid electricity, as well as photo electric and motion sensor cells to automatically adjust lighting levels depending on conditions. During times of low activity, the lights will dim to 20% but return to full luminosity if the motion sensors detect people in the area.
This means during periods of low activity, there is reduced night-time disturbance and light spill to neighbouring residents. The smart lighting also creates a well-lit area when the space is in use, which is important to local community safety.
“We had the opportunity to implement a solution that could change the way we provide safety in urban spaces. The smart lighting system satisfies multiple conflicting requirements to deliver the best outcome for the community”, said Design Manager Meg Bishop.
The smart lighting system, which can be remotely controlled, saves 12,000 kWh of electricity each year, equivalent to using a split system air conditioner for 2000 days.
