Smarter Species Data For Better Decisions

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

We have created the most detailed maps yet of nationally protected species.

Environment Information Australia (EIA) develops our advanced species distribution models. These improve how we understand Australia’s biodiversity. They also help to better protect the species and their habitat.

  • The models:
  • use high quality data
  • map where land and marine based protected plants and animals are likely to be.

This includes areas where they have not yet been found.

This clearer picture helps target actions where they matter most. Developers can plan projects more responsibly and avoid sensitive habitats. Conservationists can focus protection and restoration where it is most needed.

That means more informed decisions and better outcomes for nature.

EIA is continually improving its data and modelling methods. Updated models now use finer, high resolution data. This gives a more detailed and accurate view of species and their habitats. You can access the maps and data at regional and national levels.

The improved data supports more accurate assessments. It also reduces uncertainty.

The models and interactive maps support evidence based policy and regulation. Users have a reliable base to:

  • manage impacts
  • protect ecosystems
  • restore biodiversity across Australia.
