When Army reservist Major Tim Chan was stood down from his civilian career, he took the opportunity to return to full-time military service.
Australia’s commercial aviation sector took a big hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a reduction of flights pausing Major Chan’s 17 years in the industry.
Anticipating that a return to normal was some time away, Major Chan took the opportunity to do full-time service for a year.
“This was a great career break for me, and it took me into a role that broadened my horizons and has allowed me to work in operations supporting ADF’s domestic support response,” Major Chan said.
He transitioned at a busy time for the ADF, with significant domestic operations underway to support the fight against COVID-19.
It was also a perfect time for him to build upon his service experience.
“I’ve typically used my reserve career as an additional way of getting good leadership training while giving back to the Australian community,” Major Chan said.
“The past 15 months, however, have been very busy operationally.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in all three domestic operations – Bush Fire Assist 19/20, COVID-19 Assist and Flood Assist 21.”
Major Chan said while his experience was a streamlined processed, for those looking to transition to temporary full-time service, there were still actions needed to speed things up.
“Make sure you have completed all of your AIRN, medical assessments and dental requirement,” Major Chan said.
“Also, ensure you have completed all of the required initial training and are deemed competent to move into your desired position.
“This can all be done well in advance of the position anticipated start date.”
