Australia has a stronger understanding of its soils thanks to research delivered through the Australian Government’s Soil Science Challenge Program.
The $20 million program was established to answer key questions about Australian soils and build knowledge to help address today’s challenges and prepare for the future.
The program supported 11 research projects across seven Australian universities.
Research investigated some of the major questions facing Australian soils, including soil hydrology, soil carbon dynamics, soil biology and nutrients and the soil/root interface. Universities also worked with research organisations, including CSIRO, Rural Research and Development Corporations and state government departments, bringing together expertise from across Australia.
The research has already resulted in 31 peer-reviewed journal papers, with more expected to be published. The program has also helped develop the next generation of soil researchers and professionals.
Several projects improved our understanding of soil carbon, including how carbon is stored in soil and how drought, nitrogen and soil biology can affect carbon over time. Researchers also explored low-emission soil treatments and how different grazing systems can influence soil carbon.
A key theme that emerged across the research was there is no one-size fits all approach to managing Australia’s soils. Climate, soil type, rainfall and farming systems vary greatly between regions, which means soil management needs to reflect local conditions. This knowledge can help guide future policy, research and investment, as well as practical decisions about soil management.
While the program has finished, its impact will continue. The new knowledge, partnerships and soil scientists supported through the program provide a strong foundation for future research and better decisions about one of Australia’s most valuable resources: soil.
