South Bank station upgrades steaming ahead

Boarding the train from Brisbane’s iconic South Bank will soon be easier and safer, as accessibility upgrades hit overdrive.

The news comes ahead of a 12-day closure of platform 1 (outbound), which kicks off on Monday (23 May 2022).

Queensland Rail Head of South East Queensland Scott Riedel thanked customers in advance for their patience.

“We are continuing our work to make public transport accessible for all Queenslanders, as part of the over $500 million Station Accessibility Upgrade Program,” Mr Riedel said.

“To make sure we complete the necessary works quickly and safely, we will be closing the outbound platform (platform 1) for about 12 days.

“More than 600m2 of concrete will be poured during this time – seeing the platform raised from its current height to make boarding safer and easier than ever before.

“We know how important this improvement will be for regular users of South Bank stations, especially those connecting to local hospitals, and parents with prams visiting Streets Beach.”

Mr Riedel asked customers travelling outbound from Roma Street to South Bank to plan their travel in advance.

“From Monday (23 May), customers travelling outbound will need to disembark at South Brisbane or Park Road stations,” he said.

“Trains will run express from South Brisbane to Park Road station during this time, but I assure customers there will be no impact to inbound services.

“A short walk, bus, e-scooter, or inbound train to platform 2 will get you back to South Bank station and on your way to your destination. 

“Lots of staff will be talking to customers at the station, in addition to signage, announcements and notification via email, social media and the website.

“We will also have direct communication with local businesses and schools to assist.”

The project to upgrade platform 1 will deliver a full-length raised platform, new seating and waiting shelters, improved lighting, CCTV and station signage.

Mr Riedel said the upgrade would support 250 jobs – boosting the local economy at a time when it is most needed.

“This project will ensure easier, safer access for everyone in the community, including those using mobility devices, seniors and customers travelling with prams and luggage,” he said.

“This infrastructure will benefit the South Bank precinct now, and as we look towards the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We expect to see the project completed by early next year (2023), weather and construction conditions permitting.

“I’m proud of the work Queensland Rail is doing to make Queensland’s world-class rail network the best it can be for each and every customer.”
