A rainy Goodman Plaza at the Lismore campus. Southern Cross University has joined the community effort across the Northern Rivers as floodwaters rise to dangerous levels for the second time in five weeks.
The University’s Lismore campus is closed temporarily to students and staff due to road access issues across the region.
Campus activities planned for this week will be rescheduled.
The NSW Government has re-opened the evacuation centre on campus with about 60 people accommodated today. Many of the agencies who responded to the February 28 flood are still based on the campus and are on hand to assist evacuees.
Torrential rain overnight prompted evacuation orders for parts of the Northern Rivers as floodwaters rose rapidly today (Wednesday), including the Lismore CBD.
“We are monitoring the situation and urge people to stay safe,” Vice Chancellor Professor Tyrone Carlin said.
“Southern Cross University staff and students have been asked not to travel if they can possibly avoid it and we switching to online study where necessary for this week.”
The Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour campuses remain open, however some classes at the Gold Coast will be delivered online to minimise staff and student travel.
