An inspiring 11-year-old boy from Dunsborough, Lenny Warren, has presented a cheque for $8400 to Cancer Council WA, following an extraordinary fundraising effort that saw him swim in the ocean every single day of 2024 to support those impacted by cancer.
Lenny said his inspiration came from his dad, Micheal Warren, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2022 at just 40 years old.
“It was a big shock, because my dad is the fittest and healthiest person I know,” Lenny said.
“He’s better now, but I thought if I raise money it might help scientists find a cure so no one else has to go through it.”
Lenny’s challenge began on 1 January 2024 with a modest goal to raise $500. He passed that amount on the first day and never stopped swimming until New Year’s Eve. His daily swims included freezing winter mornings and stormy evenings.
“I chose to do it because I love everything about the ocean so much,” he said.
“There was one time when there was a storm with thunder and lightning whilst I was swimming. Some nights I forgot to swim earlier, so I had to jump in late at night!”
Cancer Council WA Southwest Regional Education Officer, Julie Rose, praised Lenny’s determination and generosity.
“Lenny is an extraordinary young person, and we are incredibly grateful to him and everyone who has supported his amazing effort,” Ms Rose said.
His dedication will help us continue providing vital support to West Australians affected by cancer and contribute to lifesaving cancer research.
“It’s only thanks to the generosity of our community and fundraisers like Lenny, that we’re able to do the work we do.”
