Motorists will be given their “naughty or nice” rating this festive season.
The City has rolled out a Christmas message on 73 Speed Awareness Devices across the Gold Coast to remind motorists to check their speed leading into the busy holiday period.
Mayor Tom Tate said speeding drivers may not get a lump of coal in their stocking, however they would be told to put the brakes on.
“If you drive past one of our devices at a safe speed you will be greeted by a smiling Santa. There will be no happy Santas for speeding motorists. They will be told to slow down,” said Mayor Tate.
“Our Speed Awareness Devices are in areas where motorists often exceed the speed limit.
“They have been extremely successful with figures showing an average reduction of 7-9 kilometres, with 50 per cent of drivers putting a stop to their speeding.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we want to ensure everyone gets home to their families safely this Christmas.”
The devices are part of the Drive Safe Community Speed Awareness Program, a key initiative of the Gold Coast Road Safety Plan 2015-2020.

Examples of where some devices currently are include: Ormeau – Creek Street and Goldmine Road; Yatala – Paterson Road; Helensvale – Ridgevale Drive and Helensvale Road; Oxenford – Kopps Road and California Drive; Pacific Pines – Victoria Drive, Universal Street and Pacific Pines Blvd; Oxenford – Regatta Ave; Runaway Bay – Broadwater Street, Bayview Street and Medika Street; Hollywell – Columbus Drive; Labrador – Whiting Street and McMillan Street; Southport – Johnston Street and Minnie Street; Bundall – Racecourse Drive; Ashmore – Heeb Street, Parasol Street and Glenmore Drive; Surfers Paradise – Salerno Street; Carrara – Palm Meadows Drive and Plateau Cres; Mudgeeraba – Cobai Drive and Wallandra Road; Broadbeach Waters – Rio Vista Blvd and Monaco Street; Robina – Newport Drive and Tullamarine Drive; Palm Beach – Tahiti Ave; Tugun – Tooloona Street; and Elanora – Simpsons Road.
The devices will be moved throughout the city.
