Spotlight on Bike Safety: Ballina Shire

Spotlight on Bike Safety

From 14 to 16 November 2022 Ballina Shire Council is putting the spotlight on bike safety.

“Cycling is a great way to get fit and see the sights of Ballina, and we want to make sure that cyclists on the road and on shared paths are safe,” said Council’s Road Safety Officer Helen Carpenter.

“Whether you’re on your bike, driving, or walking we all have a role to play in cycling safety.”

Important reminders to keep cyclists safe:

  • On roads where the speed limit is 60km/h or less, drivers must give cyclists 1m passing distance.
  • On roads where the speed limit is over 60km/h, drivers must give cyclists 1.5m passing distance.
  • On shared paths, cyclists and pedestrians should keep left and share the track.
  • Cyclists on shared paths should travel at a safe speed and ring their bell when approaching other people.
  • Pedestrians on shared paths can help by keeping dogs on short leashes and moving off the path if stopped.

To help promote bike safety, Council has free giveaways of bike bells, saddle bags, lights, and safety information on our shire’s shared paths.

Look out for Council’s Road Safety officer at these locations:

  • Tuesday 15 November 2022, 8.30am to 9.30am, North Wall shared path (near Marine Rescue Tower).
  • Wednesday 16 November 2022, 9am to10am, Kerry Saxby Walk and shared path (The Spit carpark/ picnic area)

This event is supported by Transport for NSW and Ballina Shire Council.
