Spotlight on temporary housing approaching storm anniversary

Logs in treed area

As we close in on the first anniversary of the June 2021 storm, Yarra Ranges Mayor, Jim Child, is calling for longer term solutions for temporary accommodation for residents who lose their home in an emergency.

“The number one concern for our local residents right now is having some certainty about where they can live while they go through the rebuilding process,” said Cr Child.

“Following the storm there were several families who have had to move into rental properties and they have 12 months rental cover from their insurers. However, that time limit is now up, and homes have not been rebuilt. Our residents need quick assurance that this cover will be extended as they continue to rebuild.

“We are aware of a number of insurance companies who are doing the right thing and supporting residents through this difficult time by giving extensions, but there are still a number of residents with a high level of stress not knowing what tomorrow will bring for them.

“We’re calling on all insurance companies to ensure that residents who lost their home during the June 2021 storm know where they’re going to live while they rebuild,” added Cr Child.
