Camden residents are invited to grab their binoculars and discover the birdlife on their doorstep during Aussie Bird Count Week.

Running from Monday 19 to Sunday 25 October, Aussie Bird Count Week is Australia’s largest birdwatching and citizen science event. To support this national initiative, Council will host two free guided bird-watching walks at Harrington Park Lake on Tuesday 20 October from 5pm and Camden Town Farm on Saturday 24 October from 7.30am.

Experienced bird specialist Mark Fuller from Avianation will lead both walks, sharing practical tips to help participants identify birds and learn more about the species found across Camden.

Council will provide binoculars and participants are encouraged to bring a smartphone and download the free Aussie Bird Count App to record their sightings during the walk.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Vince Ferreri, said the walks were a great way for families to connect with nature close to home.

“These walks are designed for families and beginners, so they’re a great opportunity to get outdoors, learn something new and discover the incredible birdlife we have right here in Camden,” he said.

“Every bird sighting counts. By recording what we see through the Aussie Bird Count, we can all can contribute to a much bigger picture of Australia’s bird populations and biodiversity.

“And if you’re not able to attend one of the guided walks, you can still take part in Aussie Bird Count Week! You can download the free Aussie Bird Count App and recording birds spotted in your backyard, local park or neighbourhood. I encourage everyone to take part however they can.”

The Harrington Park Lake walk will also provide participants a glimpse of the endangered Grey-headed Flying-fox camp located within the lake area, with attendees able to observe the evening fly-out at dusk. Both walks will follow Council pathways and are suitable for participants with a moderate level of fitness. Parking and toilet facilities will be available nearby.

Bookings for the two free guided bird-watching walks will open on Tuesday 6 October. For more information, and to book your spot, visit:
