The motto at 1 Combat Communications Squadron is ‘Adroit’, meaning clever or skilful. In 2023, the Amberley flight blended that ethos into their personal lives by getting together to read and raise money for charity.
Throughout the year, the squadron raised more than $1000 though events and morale-boosting competitions, with all funds going to The Smith Family – supporting Australian children and young people to overcome educational inequality caused by poverty.
Air liaison officer technician at RAAF Base Amberley Leading Aircraftman Todd Konemann has been a driving force behind the project and said there are benefits not only for the squadron, but the greater community.
“We recently completed the ‘5 books in 50 days challenge’ and in the past year we held various other events to raise funds in support of The Smith Family,” Leading Aircraftman Konemann said.
“I have personally realised that in doing these type of charity fundraising events, it helps bring the team together in support of a good cause.”
Leading Aircraftman Konemann said the Amberley flight keeps charities like The Smith Family front of mind when they hold events.
“Two years ago we decided to run a voting poll and see what charity the unit would like to support, and we landed on The Smith Family,” he said.
“I personally like to support charity organisations, but when I get the chance to do it with the team I love it more.”
The ‘5 books in 50 days challenge’ was inspired by the ‘Brothers and Books Club’, whose goal is setting up community libraries to encourage people to read when they are facing hardship.
“I really enjoyed reading Leadership, Strategy and Tactics by Jocko Willink and The Commando by Ben McKelvey, and knowing I was helping The Smith Family while doing it was extra special,” Leading Aircraftman Konemann said.
“I hope to inspire other team members to look for these opportunities to give back to the community. Even if you are away, when you have time, doing something is better than nothing.”
