Staff, patrons and residents evacuated as fire breaks out in hotel in Marrickville

An operation is continuing after fire broke out in a hotel in Marrickville shortly before midnight.

Emergency services were called to the hotel at the corner of Marrickville Road and Garners Avenue about 11.50pm (Monday 6 December 2021), and found the two-storey brick building well-alight.

About 20 people – staff and patrons and two residents – were in the building when the fire broke out. They have been evacuated with several being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters are working to contain the blaze with the building sustaining extensive damage.

Officers from Inner West Police Area Command have closed Marrickville Road between Silver Street and Gladstone Street; motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire is still being determined; however, police are keen to speak with a man seen running from the location as the fire broke out.

Anyone who may have information about the man’s identity, or has dashcam vision relevant to the investigation, is urged to call Inner West police or Crime Stoppers.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Marrickville Police Station or Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
