More job pain for Victoria as second wave hits
Payroll jobs data released by theAustralian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today has painted a grim picture for Victorian businesses following the hit to the economy caused by Labor’s bungled hotel quarantine program.
The number of payroll jobs in Victoria has fallen 7.8 per cent since the pandemic began in March, compared with a national reduction of 4.9 per cent.
In stark contrast, in the last month, payroll jobs in Victoria have shrunk by 2.8 per cent, with the Australia-wide reduction being 1.0 per cent.
With over 145,000 Victorians having lost their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Labor’s incompetent handling of its hotel quarantineproblem is leading to even more job losses.
As stated by Shadow Treasurer, Louise Staley:
“Victorians looking for work were dealt another blow today with these deeply concerning payroll jobs figures.
“While other states slowly recover and people get back to work, Victorians are being hit with the economic brunt of a second wave caused by Labor’s bungling of its hotel quarantine program.
“Rather than trying to usurp Parliament and grant themselves carte blanche power to bypass scrutiny for 12 months, Daniel Andrews and Labor should be focussing on getting jobs for out-of-work Victorians so they can provide for their families and start to rebuild their lives.”
