Statement from Shadow Minister for Planning and Heritage

Liberal Party Victoria

The collapse of building contractor, Probuild, has sent shockwaves through the construction sector.

While there were a number of factors cited by Probuild’s parent company, “the combination of border restrictions, snap lockdowns and mandatory work-from-home regulations” were amongst the principle reasons blamed for the collapse.

The State Government failed to heed the warnings about the impacts of the world’s longest lockdowns on industry, with the consequences for the construction sector now being realised.

As property owners now seek replacement building contractors to complete the abandoned Probuild projects, the State Government must play its part.

With thousands of subcontractors losing their jobs, it is vital that the Andrews Labor Government act to facilitate an orderly completion of these projects as quickly as possible.

Settling these matters can often lead to prolonged periods battling in the courts. It is important that all parties take a sensible approach by discussing and offering reasonable terms. Taking another path will only slow the process of getting people back on the tools and back to work.
