Statement on Mal Meninga

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has granted Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga permission to be relieved of his Kangaroos responsibilities in the short term to join the Queensland State of Origin coaching staff for the 2020 series.

Mr Meninga will step down from his Kangaroos duties and forgo his remuneration during his involvement with Queensland.

ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM said the Commission had granted approval given there are no Test Matches this year.

“This year is an exceptional year,” he said.

“Under normal circumstances you can’t be Head Coach of the Kangaroos and be involved in an Origin squad. But given there are no Test Matches because of COVID we have granted Mal permission to assist Queensland.

“Mal is an Origin legend and his presence in the series will add an additional layer of excitement for our fans and players.”

Mr Meninga remains contracted as Head Coach of the Kangaroos until the end of 2021.
