Stonnington KVB Sustainable Cities Award finalist

The City of Stonnington has been highly commended in not one but four separate categories of the 2021 Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards.

The Awards recognise and celebrate positive actions taken by communities in urban areas to protect and enhance their local environments.

Chapel Off Chapel has been recognised for its environmental initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency, while the masterplan for the transformation and enhancement of Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) and surrounds has been highly commended for its vision to improve the quality of stormwater entering the Yarra River, enhance biodiversity as well as celebrate cultural heritage.

The Council’s Zero Waste Early Learning Centre’s Program was nominated for its innovative ways to introduce waste management practices while educating children and families, incorporating a recycling, repurposing and reusing philosophy, and the Environmental Champions Program, now in its second year, was selected for its unique approach to building the community’s leadership capacity to take local environmental action and deliver projects to create a more sustainable Stonnington.

Also, in the Social Wellbeing category, the City of Stonnington’s Nature Play Handbook, which provides practical support for families and educators to encourage nature play, was highly commended. The handbook promotes outdoor activities to improve focus, motor skills and physical health, as well as assist children to develop resilience, independence and self-awareness.

The Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable Cities Award nominations recognise the excellent work happening across the organisation to improve the City of Stonnington’s environmental performance, support our community and respond to the climate emergency.
