Strike Force Lyra make arrests for domestic violence incidents

Strike Force Lyra continue to investigate reports of domestic violence with three offenders arrested over the weekend.

A 50-year-old man was arrested in Casuarina on Friday after he assaulted his partner earlier this year. The woman was in intensive care for three days after she suffered multiple fractures to her jaw as result of the attack.

Sergeant Caragh Hen said “Strike Force Lyra members have been investigating the assault and arrested the man without incident. He has been charged with unlawfully cause serious harm and breach a DVO. The matter is now before the courts.”

Members also arrested a 28-year-old man for his involvement in the assault of his former partner.

It is alleged that the man verbally and physically assaulted the woman on multiple occasions last week. During an incident on Friday, the man allegedly assaulted the woman, while dragging her by the hair and continued to aggressively assault her before breaking one of the woman’s fingers.

Nearby witnesses intervened before calling for help. The woman was taken to hospital while police attempted to locate the offender who fled the scene. The man was located and arrested yesterday. He has since been charged with:

  • Possess controlled weapon,
  • 3 x Aggravated assault and
  • 2 x Recklessly endanger serious harm

The third incident relates to an incident which occurred last Thursday, where a couple had a verbal altercation and when the woman attempted to walk away the man grabbed hold of her hair from behind and pulled her to the ground, before dragging her a short distance and continuing to assault her.

Upon arrival, police located the man continuing to hold the woman and threatening her. The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Make threats to kill,
  • Aggravated assault and
  • Recklessly endanger serious harm.

The woman received medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Sergeant Hen said that police take these incidents incredibly seriously and will continue to investigate all reported incidents of domestic violence.

“It is also a reminder to the public that in the Northern Territory, you must report Domestic and Family Violence. We would like to extend our thanks to members of the public who continue to provide aid and make reports to police.”
