Strong hotel occupancy rates delivering for Tasmanian hospitality and events

Nic Street,Minister for Hospitality and Events

Tasmania has experienced another strong month of occupancy rates in April, demonstrating the resilience and determination of our world-class accommodation providers.

The Hotel Occupancy Report for April shows that 81.57 per cent of available rooms across the State were filled, which is the strongest April figure we’ve ever seen by about five per cent.

In the South, 89.5 per cent of rooms were filled, 88.14 per cent were filled in the North and 78.46 per cent were filled in the North West.

The occupancy figures for the quarter of 2022 are also up compared to last year which is a strong signal of confidence in the industry and confidence in tourists returning to our island.

The encouraging trend comes as we see increased hotel inventory in the market with the opening of the Tasman in Hobart late last year, along with hotels like the Vibe, Movenpick and Crowne Plaza also in Hobart and the Verge Hotel in Launceston opening in the years prior.

Importantly, noting that April signals the start of the non-peak tourism period, these statistics bring confidence that the winter period will be strong for our visitor economy.

Our Government has made careful and considered decisions to reopen our borders and ease restrictions to bring back visitors to our State and encourage locals to get out and about. The changes to close contact requirements and the use of the Tas Check-in App at hospitality venues recently were yet another step in the right direction as we continue our transition to living with COVID-19.

With Dark Mofo now underway, and around 30 events scheduled to take place across Tasmania over the next six months, it’s clear that our plan to bring back visitors to the State is working and we are on a strong path forward.
