Student’s design of new light rail signage rolled out

Artwork by a Gungahlin College student has been wrapped around a light rail vehicle, promoting safety on the light rail corridor.

“We all need to pay attention and stay alert at all times when walking, cycling or driving near the light rail,” Minister for Transport, Chris Steel said.

A design competition in November 2019 for Year 11 and 12 students at Gungahlin College saw students using their artistic talents to get the message out to the broader community.

The winning design by Year 11 student, Tahlia Jones has been produced in a retro pop art style and contains two important safety messages.

Both designs feature traffic signals, a group of people and a woman in a yelling pose with the words – ‘Be Street Wise, Be Safe, Be Seen’. Extra wording is also placed at the end of the message with the tagline – ‘Don’t tempt fate, wait!’.

“It’s great to see the high quality work produced by Tahlia and the other students at Gungahlin College, and it’s really encouraging to see young people taking safety seriously,” Minister Steel said.

“Light rail safety is everyone’s responsibility and we all need to play our part when we’re travelling close to the light rail corridor. For motorists, road rules stay the same. Remember to not queue across the tracks at any time and ensure light rail is not obstructed in any way.

“Passengers should stay behind the yellow line at the light rail stop. Pedestrians and cyclists should stop and look both ways before crossing the tracks and always wait for the green pedestrian signal. Most importantly, look up and pay attention around the tracks and stops. Remember to not be distracted by your phone.”

The light rail safety message will also be promoted with graphic students designs appearing on drink coasters at restaurants, cafes and licensed venues as well as a yearly calendar for 2020.

In January 2020, a second light rail vehicle will also be wrapped with the safety poster.
