Students invited to dive in to training for swimming jobs

  • Eligible Year 12 students can register for training to be qualified swimming instructors
  • Training will ensure participants are job-ready to meet State-wide demand for VacSwim instructors over the busy summer period
  • Successful initiative now in the second year
  • Following the rollout of the successful initiative in 2020, Year 12 students are once again invited to register in a fully-funded training program to become qualified swimming instructors.

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today encouraged eligible students to register for the program that will equip them with the skills to work with the Department of Education’s VacSwim program over the summer holidays and the Interm Swimming program, which runs all year round in many locations.

To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in Year 12 at a Western Australian school and be at least 17 years of age.

The program will be available across the metropolitan area and in specific regional centres. Participants will also receive ongoing support and mentoring.

Through the program, trainees will obtain an accredited swimming teacher qualification, including a CPR qualification. The qualification can also give extra credit towards WACE requirements as two of the qualifications are registered as provider-developed endorsed programs with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.

Upon completion of the program, students can then apply for swimming instructor positions across the State in time for VacSwim lessons.

There are also continuing opportunities for further employment as an instructor after VacSwim has finished through teaching swimming in the Department of Education’s Interm Swimming Program which starts in February and runs throughout the school year.

More information about how to register is available here.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“Swimming and spending time near water is a much-loved pastime for many Western Australian people.

“The VacSwim and Interm programs run by the Department of Education are an important part of teaching kids how to swim and act safely in the water.

“This valuable initiative provides Year 12 students with the opportunity to become qualified swimming instructors, gain paid employment, and make a difference in the community.”
