National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Area Manager, Steve Smith welcomed the new accommodation managers to the site, as the 3 cottages were re-opened in November after recent conservation repair works.

Set against the beautiful bushland backdrop of Myall Lakes National Park, the popular lighthouse cottages provide a unique coastal escape for a family holiday or a romantic getaway for couples.

“The lighthouse cottages are a jewel in the crown of the NSW mid-north coast, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean from 3 cottages within the lighthouse precinct and have been operating as holiday accommodation for 10 years,” Mr Smith said.

“Originally constructed in 1875 by colonial architect James Barnet, the lighthouse precinct is part of an operational lighthouse and represents a rich cultural history for its role in fishing, maritime safety, shipwrecks and the local communities.

“Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse was built on the headland 79 metres above sea level and is the only lighthouse in New South Wales with an external staircase”, he said.

The lighthouse keepers’ cottages recently underwent significant conservation works to rejuvenate the property, including major repairs to 3 of the original brick chimneys, repairs to salt-affected walls and a new coat of paint.

“With the summer holiday season upon us visitors can book the Seal Rocks Lighthouse Cottages for holiday accommodation, and take advantage of the range of wonderful outdoor activities, such as bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing and swimming on offer in the surrounding Myall Lakes National Park”, Mr Smith said.
