Superannuation drives 1.0% growth in household wealth

Total household wealth rose by 1.0 per cent, or $201.1 billion, in the June quarter 2026, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Dr Mish Tan, ABS head of finance statistics, said: ‘Strong growth in superannuation assets in the June quarter 2026 has led to growth in household wealth. Superannuation assets grew by 5.2 per cent and offset a 0.2 per cent fall in the value of land and dwellings.’

‘Superannuation growth was driven by growth in global and domestic equity markets, as they recovered from relatively low share price levels at the start of the middle east conflict in March’, Dr Tan said.

‘Despite the value of land and dwellings falling for the first time since September 2022, it remains 8.0 per cent higher compared to the same period last year’, Dr Tan said.

The fall in residential land and dwellings was driven by lower property prices. The mean dwelling price fell by 0.7 per cent with falls seen across New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.

Household borrowing grew 2.2 per cent, or $73.4 billion, reducing the overall growth in household wealth by 0.4 percentage points.

Total demand for credit was $132.7 billion this quarter, a fall of $24.7 billion from the previous quarter.

Demand for credit was driven by private non-financial businesses ($73.5 billion) and households ($72.6 billion), partially offset by general government (-$18.3 billion).

Household demand for credit reached a new record of $72.6 billion, driven by growth in housing loan balances and borrowing by private unincorporated businesses such as sole traders.

‘Despite total borrowing activity falling in the June quarter, the value of new borrowing remains at elevated levels and continues to support growth in housing loan balances,’ Dr Tan said.

Private non-financial businesses demand for credit was driven by funding from loans of $43.8 billion and equity raising of $23.6 billion.

General government’s demand for credit of -$18.3 billion was the lowest on record, as the Commonwealth government made repayments on maturing debt securities. The repayment of debt this quarter follows on from $41.2 billion demand for credit in the previous quarter.
