Support for our sports sector keeps Tasmanians in jobs

Jane Howlett,Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Tasmanian Government has provided significant support to the sport and recreation sector throughout COVID-19, in recognition of the big role the sector plays in bringing communities together.

I am proud that our Government has been able to provide funding of over $2.9 million to support the sector, which has helped keep Tasmanians employed and assisted clubs and organisations to resume competition in a COVID Safe way.

Tranche One of our COVID-19 Sports and Recreation Assistance Package kept more than 180 Tasmanian sporting administrators in work despite the loss of revenues from the postponement of competitions.

Today I am pleased to announce that Tranche Two has now closed and 431 organisations have been approved for grants to help them return to play with more than $900,000 allocated directly to clubs.

Having attended many sporting matches over the last few months, I have seen first-hand what this support has meant to clubs across all sporting codes. Our Government understands the impact COVID-19 has had on the state’s sporting community and I thank everyone for their patience and commitment during this challenging time.

I would also like to wish all the Tasmanian teams set to compete in finals over the coming weeks the best of luck.
