Supporting our first-class police force by investing in new police stations

Mark Shelton,Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of Tasmania Police and we are investing to ensure our officers have the tools and infrastructure needed to do their job and protect Tasmanians.

I’m pleased to announce land has now been secured in Longford to build a new $5 million purpose-built police station to service the needs of Longford and the greater Northern Midlands community now and into the future.

This new site has the space to build a brand new facility with the capacity and security requirements to respond to the current needs of the community, as well as providing for future development.

It’s also strategically situated on an arterial road, providing rapid access to respond to incidents.

Work is now underway for the next steps of this important community project, with construction scheduled to begin by mid-2020, with a completion expected by mid-2021.

Tasmanians deserve to live in safety and free from the impact of crime and the Hodgman majority Liberal Government makes no apology for being tough on crime and investing in our police force to keep Tasmanians safe.

We are supporting our first-class police service by investing in infrastructure upgrades including new stations at Longford, Sorell and New Norfolk, but also through employing more police.

While the former Labor-Green Government sacked 108 police officers, the Hodgman majority Liberal Government is recruiting an additional 125 police officers to boost frontline policing and make our communities safer.
