Supporting Tasmanian small businesses to grow and thrive

Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Small Business

Small business is the engine room of our economy and the Tasmanian Liberal Government has a clear plan to support the sector to strengthen Tasmania’s future.

The 2022-26 Business Growth Strategy is being developed by the Tasmanian Liberal Government, in partnership with the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Tasmanian Small Business Council.

Phase two of the consultation process is open until this Friday and I would encourage everyone to provide feedback on our draft strategy.

Once finalised, it will set our plan for economic and employment growth in Tasmanian businesses.

There is no doubt the business landscape will continue to evolve and change, but by working together, we can ensure Tasmania’s small business community will be in the strongest possible position to respond to whatever challenges may come our way.

Over the last two years, Tasmanian small businesses have demonstrated resilience, flexibility and perseverance and our Government is committed to supporting our State’s small business sector and the tens of thousands of Tasmanians it employs.

During the pandemic, Tasmanian businesses received more than $165 million COVID-specific support – the highest level of support for businesses per capita of any jurisdiction in the country.

One local business which took advantage of the Government support available was iconic Salamanca seafood restaurant Blue Eye.

Owner and head chef Joff Jennings said as the business gears up for what is expected to be a very busy summer period, he was immensely grateful for the support which has seen Blue Eye go from surviving to thriving.

“The grants on offer have been instrumental in helping our business survive, and it’s good to see that these programs are continuing,” he said.

“The Government has listened to businesses and acted, which is great.”
