Sustainably managing Tasmania’s forest industry

Guy Barnett,Minister for Resources

The Sustainable Timber Tasmania Annual Report for 2019/20 confirms our plan to grow the industry is working, with the industry supporting thousands of jobs across the State, many in our regional areas.

Despite a challenging year with the impacts of COVID-19 on international woodchip markets, STT achieved a profit of $3.9 million, and produced 1.6 million tonnes of wood. This includes 119,000 cubic metres of high-quality eucalypt sawlogs and over 7,900 cubic metres of special species timbers.

Our forestry industry is world-class and sustainable and we will continue doing all we can to drive investment and create jobs for Tasmanians in this vital industry that suffered so much under the disastrous Labor-Green Government.

STT has also planted more native seeds than any other group in Tasmania (160 million), actively regenerating Tasmania’s forests to ensure their sustainability for future generations.

Pleasingly, STT continues to work hard to protect communities from the impacts of bushfires with the report confirming STT staff contributed 32,000 hours of firefighting activities while attending 47 bushfires.

STT also maintained over 3,000 km of roads, providing access and support for regional tourism businesses, recreational activities and firefighting.

We will continue to work hard to ensure our forestry sector remains as strong as possible as it employs thousands of Tasmanians, injects more than $1.2 billion into our economy and supports regional communities and families across the State
