Mitchell Shire Council is excited to see construction beginning on Kilmore’s Sydney Street Rejuvenation Project – the largest capital works project in the municipality for many years.
Council is partnering with the Victorian Government for the $4.65 million streetscape upgrade to revive Kilmore’s historic town centre and retail precinct between Clarke Street and Bourke Street.
The Sydney Street Rejuvenation Project has been a significant part of Kilmore’s structure plan since 2016. The streetscape designs were finalised following community consultation last year.
The works will transform the look of Sydney Street and celebrate the unique historic character of the precinct. The project will include:
- new street trees and garden plantings
- safer crossing points
- heritage street furniture
- bluestone pavements
- more lights
- the addition of lightpole banner holders
- upgraded kerbs and footpaths
- more space for outdoor dining
- electronic speed signs
- more all abilities parking
- two new public bus stops.
Signage and pedestrian access to nearby off-street parking will also be improved.
Evergreen Civil has established a site office near the corner of Andrew Street and Union Street and began work last week.
The upgrade is expected to be completed in two stages over approximately nine months.
- Stage 1: Sydney Street north – between Clarke Street and Union Street – is expected to continue through to June.
- Stage 2: Sydney Street south – between Bourke Street and Union Street – is scheduled to commence in July and continue through to December.
There will be some interruption to businesses and nearby residents and some minor delays on Sydney Street during construction.
