Take extra care in our parks and reserves these holidays

The ACT Government wishes to advise that due to extended rain and thunderstorms forecasted, visitors should take extra care if heading out to parks and reserves.

Director of ACT Parks and Conservation Service Daniel Iglesias said some ACT parks and reserves have been impacted by extended periods of heavy rain over summer, which is expected to continue into this weekend and potentially next week.

“We’re expecting to see more people heading out to our parks and reserves as the school holidays begin from this weekend,” Daniel Iglesias said.

“Regardless of your level of experience, make sure you take extra precautions when getting out into nature as we may see further rain into already saturated catchments over the coming days.

“Namadgi National Park is a part of the Australian alpine area, which means conditions can change and deteriorate very quickly. Visitors should be prepared that weather can turn without warning.

“If you’re not completely comfortable and prepared for your trip, stay closer to home and consider coming back another day when the weather improves.

“Bring plenty of food and water, warm clothes including gloves and headwear, and wear appropriate footwear. Make sure to tell family or friends where you are going and when you expect to return as mobile phone reception is extremely poor in some areas.

“Streams and creeks are full of water and flood waters can occur suddenly and without much warning, leaving you trapped or stranded if you are unprepared. Steer clear of low-lying areas such as creeks, stormwater drains or other causeways.

“Take extra care around trees and other debris. Strong winds and flood waters are dangerous and will move fallen trees unpredictably, and can even topple or uproot standing trees.

“Vehicles should be well maintained with a full tank of fuel, and drivers should drive to the conditions.

Closures to some of our parks and reserves, including Namadgi National Park and campgrounds, may occur at short notice. Visit the ACT Parks website before travelling. The ACT Parks and Conservation Facebook page will be regularly updated with any closures or advice.

Stay up to date with road closures on the ACT City Services website, take care on roads, and follow all signage and alternate routes provided.

The impacts on the environment and assets will be assessed further over the coming days to reduce the risks to community.
