The Story Walk is an initiative of Sunshine Coast Libraries and Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens who have joined forces to celebrate the annual Summer Reading Club and promote the early literacy program – First 5 Forever.
The Story Walk is an innovative way to experience a children’s picture book.
From December 15 until January 25, 2019, the pages of Koalas eat gum leaves will be enlarged and integrated along a pathway in the Botanic Gardens allowing children and their families to read the book on their walk.
Community Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said the Story Walk is an absolutely brilliant idea.
“It’s wonderful to see kids outdoors,” Cr McKay said.
“The Story Walk will not only encourage an early joy for reading, but it will help develop children’s early literacy skills.
“The story that’s been chosen is all about a koala, making it a great way to connect the book and its story with the surrounding environment.
“Our guests may even be able to spot Lizzy, the garden’s resident koala, while they’re visiting.
“I’d also encourage everyone to take some time to visit the Whipbird Village where you can take advantage of the Little Free Library and read even more stories.”
Koalas eat gum leaves is a hysterical story about one koala who has had enough of gum leaves and is on the lookout for some tastier tucker.
It’s written by Sunshine Coast author-illustrator duo Laura and Philip Bunting and published by Scholastic.
Philip’s first book Mopoke recently won the honours category for Picture Book of the Year award by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
