Tassie power prices highest ever 23 October 2023

A new report has shown that the power price pain Tasmanians are facing is showing no signs of easing, with households set to pay up to $265 more this year for power than they were last year.

The St Vincent de Paul Society’s latest update on the Tasmanian Tariff-Tracking Project shows that under the new regulated electricity prices that took effect in July 2023, Tasmanian households consuming 9,060 kWh per annum will be receiving a bills between $234 and $265 a year higher in 2023 than in 2022.

Depending on the tariff Tasmanians are on, the average annual electricity bill for Tasmanians could reach $3,128, with bills increasing by 9.3 per cent on average.

Cost-of-living pressures are hurting Tasmanian budgets, with many families and households having to make difficult decisions like choosing between heating and eating.

Tasmania’s 100 year investment in the Hydro to make our own clean, renewable power should be helping keep prices low, but instead we’re seeing prices higher than ever.

A Labor Government would cap power price increases at 2.5 per cent a year for Tasmanian households and small businesses so that Tasmanians pay a Tasmanian price for Tasmanian power.

We would legislate to achieve that within 100 days of taking office.

If this policy had been in place since June last year it would have already saved the average family nearly $500.
