TasTAFE investing in campus and facility upgrades

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

A significant number of campus and facility upgrades have been highlighted in the TasTAFE 2019-20 annual report tabled today in the Tasmanian Parliament.

These upgrades are ensuring students have job-ready skills needed by the industry now and into the future as we recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

They include:

  • $1.5 million for kitchens for cookery, bakery and barista training at Devonport’s Providore Place;
  • New ICT labs and a new Nursing, Aged Care and Disability hub at Launceston’s Alanvale campus as part of $4 million in-campus upgrades; and
  • $1.4 million redevelopment of Nursing, Aged Care and Disability training facilities at Hobart’s Clarence Campus.

    Both of the health training hubs are fitted with the latest equipment and resemble real hospital wards and aged care facilities, which provides students with a real-life learning environment.

Importantly, student satisfaction with TasTAFE’s training also remains high with 91 per cent of graduates indicating they would recommend TasTAFE, which is higher than the national average of 88.1 per cent.

Employer satisfaction with TasTAFE is also high, with 89 per cent of employers recommending TasTAFE’s training and 86 per cent satisfied with the training.

The report also noted that in October 2019, TasTAFE’s refreshed Diploma of Nursing program received Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) accreditation for a period of five years.

It followed TasTAFE receiving Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) registration for seven years in July 2019, which is the maximum term available and highlights the quality of TasTAFE’s training and assessment.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government recognises the importance of TasTAFE in ensuring Tasmania has the skilled workers we need to support our economy, which is why we have invested in new infrastructure projects to enhance training facilities for students.
