An RTI released to Labor has shown there are 876 teachers on fixed-term contracts and 191 casual teachers without permanent work.
It has been made clear by education workforce representatives that there are positions being left unfilled across Tasmanian schools.
Tasmania has the poorest education outcomes in the country.
The Government can’t say teacher shortages are a national problem and not provide additional packages of support. Especially when states like Victoria are offering free degrees and bonuses to teach in regional areas.
Minister Jaensch should be doing everything he can to attract and retain staff, including providing more security through increased permanency for in demand roles.
Labor is serious about workforce development and has been working with education stakeholders on new education policies to be announced prior to the next election.
Instead of supporting professionals to establish lasting careers in education, these latest figures show the Rockliff Liberal Government relies far too heavily on fixed-term and casual employment across the department.
After 10 years of Liberal Government, Tasmania’s education outcomes are the worst of any state in Australia and our hardworking teachers and staff are stretched to the limit.
